Unofficial second look

31 tabs became one board.

Heptabase is a visual knowledge base for people learning hard things: students, researchers, the permanently curious. Sources, notes and half-formed thoughts go on whiteboards as cards, so you can see what you know and what is still missing. Same topic on both sides of the seam below. Drag it.

Sources stop being tabs

The usual way

  • A PDF in one window, a lecture in another, a chat answer in a third, your notes in a doc named final-v2.
  • The highlight you made on Tuesday lives inside the PDF, invisible to everything else you know.
  • Closing the browser feels like losing the work, so the tabs stay open for weeks.

On the board

  • PDFs, videos, web pages and journal entries become cards that sit next to your own notes.
  • You annotate the PDF and pull the highlight out as its own card, still tied to the page it came from.
  • Cards link both ways, so a source shows every note that used it. Imports bring existing highlights and libraries with you.

Thinking you can see

A list hides the shape of an argument. A whiteboard shows it: the question in the middle, evidence around it, the gap where a source should be. Click a card on this small board. Its links light up, and the strip below explains it the way the product's AI tutor explains a source back to you, in plain words, from the card itself.

Sample board · sleep and memory · invented cards

ExplainedPick a card. In the real product you can ask the AI to explain any source, quiz you on it, or talk through where your understanding is thin.

The usual way

Rereading notes top to bottom and hoping the understanding is in there somewhere. It usually is, in pieces, in the wrong order, with the contradiction on page four quietly never meeting the claim on page one.

On the board

Cards can be grouped, nested and reused across boards, so one hard idea can sit in your exam board and your thesis board at once. The board is the draft of the answer, long before you write the answer.

Kept like a tool, not a feed

The usual way

  • Notes apps that need a connection, a subscription nag, and a folder system you abandon by March.
  • Research stranded on the laptop it started on.
  • A group project living in six people's separate documents.

With Heptabase

  • Works offline, with your notes and files on your machine, and stays quick as the library grows.
  • Mobile capture for the thought on the bus, voice notes included, sorted later at the desk.
  • Shared boards when the thinking is a team sport, so the group argues on one surface instead of six.

None of that is the headline, and that is the point. The product's bet is that the surface matters: put knowledge somewhere you can arrange it with your hands, and understanding stops being something you search for and becomes something you can point at.

A sketch in steel. The product is real.

This page was drawn and written for Un-slop as one way to tell the story: chaos on the left, understanding on the right, one seam between. The research, cards and conclusions here are invented samples. Nothing on this page states the company's prices, plans, customers or results, and no interface, logo or text was copied from them.
