What Parlor would cost
Stays black, because it's yours
Drag the room to turn it. Under tab B, keep anything you already own: its red piece folds away and the bill drops.
Cut out what it would take.
Every new piece, measured to fit this room. Keep one of yours and its red piece folds away, yours stands back up, and the bill drops.
How a room gets folded.
Four steps, the same as the instructions on any cut-out model.
-
Photograph
Stand in the doorway and take one photo with the phone at chest height and the whole floor in view.
-
Trace
Tab A traces the walls, the window, the door, the floor and each piece of furniture it can see, measured from where you stood, and builds the room.
-
Ask
Say what you want in plain words: “plainer”, “warmer”, “room for six at Thanksgiving”. It restyles the room to suit and prints the new pieces in red.
-
Turn and keep
Turn the room around, keep what you own, and take the list of pieces shopping. Every piece has its size, so it fits before you buy it.
The model is yours to keep. Open it in any browser, or print it on any printer, cut along the dashes and fold along the dots.
What it can't see, printed on the back.
Turn any Tab A room around and the guesses are on the outside of the walls, hatched in red. We'd rather you saw them before the delivery truck comes.
- Behind and underneath. Whatever the sofa hides, the photo hides. The wall behind it is drawn as a guess.
- Height, to about 2 inches. A photo from a doorway can't measure a ceiling exactly. Measure a nook before you buy for it.
- A screen isn't a wall. Paint on a phone is lit by the phone. Buy a sample pot and look at it at night.
- It won't move a door, a radiator or an outlet. It redesigns the room you have, not the one you'd build.
- It can't tell you if a sofa is comfortable. Sit on it first.
The price.
$12 a room
One photo, two styles, the parts sheet and as many re-folds as the room needs. $29 covers a whole house, up to six rooms. Prices are this fictional company's.
Who folds them
Tab A is two people and a printer in a spare bedroom in Columbus. Before this they drew room sets for furniture catalogs, and got tired of drawing rooms nobody lives in.
Other rooms, folded.
Three of last month's rooms, as photographed and as they asked for. Drag across each one. The red line under it is what they actually spent.
