STOP 01Tonight, near Lake & Hennepin

Six neighbors within a mile and a half will sell you a charge tonight

Metered by the charger's own meter. Minimum session $3. The window you book is the window you park.

STOP 02Your car sets the math

Pick the car and the whole page re-prices itself

A charge is not one number. The kilowatt-hours you need depend on the battery, and the minutes depend on how fast the car can actually take them, which is set by its onboard charger long before the neighbor's wall unit matters. Pick yours and every stop from here to the booking works the same math.

STOP 03The price board

The same tank of electrons, three price boards

A gas pump shows the price before you lift the nozzle, and so does every pin on the map. Here is what tonight's charge costs on three boards, worked out for the car you picked at stop 02.

STOP 05The fine print, on the board

What a session includes, and what it never will

A driveway charger is not a station. It is someone's home, and the rules say so plainly.

EVERY SESSION INCLUDES

  • The charge itself, metered by the charger's own meter, not an estimate
  • Parking for the window you booked, in the driveway, not the curb
  • The cable, J1772 or NACS as listed, and the wifi code if the charger wants one
  • The host's number, in case the gate sticks or the plug is stiff
  • Snow cleared, November through March, hosts shovel before their own windows

NOT INCLUDED, EVER

  • DC fast charging, every charger on Ampshare is level 2, home speed on purpose
  • Parking without charging, the window is for the plug, idling after costs $15
  • Adapters, a NACS-to-J1772 loaner is $9 deposit at some hosts, listed on each pin
  • Overnight, unless the listing says so, and about a third do
  • A second car, the booking is for the one plate you give the host

IF THE HOST CANCELS

Full refund, automatically, up to one hour before the window, and the map offers the next nearest pin at your car's pace. It happened to 41 bookings last month out of 4,008.

IF YOU ARE LATE

Fifteen minutes of grace, then the window starts paying out anyway, because the host's evening is the thing you booked.

IF THE WEATHER TURNS

Outdoor plugs trip in a storm and that is the outlet protecting itself. A tripped session is refunded to the minute and the map flags the pin for the rest of the night.

STOP 06The hosts

Thirty-eight households within a mile, and what they made last month

Every host is a driveway with a wall unit and an evening routine. The board says what each one charges, the meter says what each one delivered.

"The app does the math and the meter does the arguing. I shovel the driveway, somebody plugs in at seven, and the deposit hits Friday. My Bolt's old charger earned its keep two years ago."

DEB T., HOST AT 40TH & GARFIELD · 63 SESSIONS · 4.9 RATING

Hosts keep 85 percent of the listed rate; the meter reading settles it, and a host can pause their calendar for a night without texting anybody. Repeat drivers can favorite a driveway, and about half of November's sessions were somebody's second or third visit to the same plug.

STOP 07Start tonight or start hosting

Drivers book in one evening. Hosts list in one evening too.

DRIVER, TONIGHT

  • Stop 01 put six chargers on one map, priced per kWh like pumps
  • Stop 02 re-ran the math for your car, not a generic one

THE FIRST SESSION

  • Create the account with your plate and your car, one minute
  • Book from the map, total known before you confirm
  • Plug in, the meter does the rest, receipt by text

HOSTING A DRIVEWAY

  • List the charger free, set your rate per kWh and your windows
  • You keep 85 percent, the meter settles it, paid weekly
  • Nothing to install if you already charge at home on a wall unit
  • Pause any night, your calendar, your driveway

WHAT A MONTH LOOKS LIKE

  • Nine sessions at an average $6.10 of charge: $46.70 to you
  • The Hallorans' October, on the map above, was $61.40
  • Taxes reported for you at year end, form ready in January
